Early archery season for whitetail deer in the Midwest begins early September. Walking around the edges of the crop fields, you can get a good idea of what kind of critters are taking advantage of all the farmer’s hard work. Trails between the available cover and the bean fields are a good place to find out which direction the tracks lead you, into or out of and in many cases both in and out of the field.

Most likely, these trails are going to lead to a drainage that borders the area. Comprised of, creeks, ditches and slues. When not full of water, by that I mean, the deer cannot simply wade in them. Make great travel corridors for the deer and most importantly monster bucks. These areas provide cover, which conceals their movements. Shade, where it is cooler and generally a nice breeze that not only helps to keep them cool, but also carries all the smells from up wind to their much relied upon, trusted nose.

When choosing a location for a stand, or hunting blind. Factor in the direction of the wind. Scent control is now and will always be the single most critical element to being successful. Regardless of whether your plans are to shoot a video, using a trail camera, full-fledged HD video camera or bowhunting you must keep the wind in your face so as not to be picked-up by the deer’s ultra sensitive nose.
